Enrichment When the Weather Isn't Playing Ball

Sometimes the weather simply isn't suitable for a walk. Heavy rain, thunderstorms, extreme temperatures or dangerous conditions can make an outdoor adventure the wrong choice for your dog.

At PathAndPaws, we don't believe that means your dog's time with us has to stop. When conditions aren't suitable for walking, we can switch gears and provide a range of indoor enrichment activities designed to keep your dog engaged, curious and mentally stimulated.

Keeping Their Mind Busy

Dogs don't just need physical exercise. They also need opportunities to think, explore, solve problems and use their natural instincts.

Enrichment activities can provide many of these benefits without requiring a long walk. Activities are chosen according to your dog's personality, interests, confidence and abilities, rather than simply following a one-size-fits-all routine.

What Might We Do?

  • Sniffing and scent games – encouraging your dog to use their incredible sense of smell to search for hidden treats or familiar scents.
  • Interactive games – simple games that encourage your dog to think, investigate and work out how to reach a reward.
  • Food puzzles and enrichment toys – carefully selected activities that encourage problem-solving and provide a satisfying mental challenge.
  • Training games – short, positive training exercises that reinforce existing skills while introducing new challenges at an appropriate pace.
  • Search and find – using scent and observation to find toys, treats or other safe objects hidden around the environment.
  • Calm interaction – for dogs who don't need another high-energy activity, quiet interaction, grooming and companionship can provide valuable stimulation too.
